WtERT UK is a sister organisation of the Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council (WtERT), based at Columbia University, New York. WtERT aims to bring together engineers, scientists and managers from industry and universities to identify and advance the best available Energy from Waste (EfW), technologies for the recovery of energy or fuels from solid wastes. With partner organisations in a number of countries including China, Germany, Japan, Canada, Brazil, Greece, Italy and now the UK, WtERT is a global resource for those looking to learn more about EfW, its use, and its role in society.

The aim of WtERT UK is to promote waste processing technologies that have potential to contribute to UK energy generation and sustainable waste management. EfW, also known as Waste-to-Energy (WtE), involves producing for heat and / or electricity by recovering the energy contained in the municipal solid wastes left after recycling and other industrial, agricultural, and forestry residues. These conversion technologies play an important role in providing energy and delivering sustainable waste management. > FAQ 1

The WtERT UK website provides an overview of the available technologies that generate EfW and acts as a gateway to unbiased information and technical data.

The first options for sustainable waste management should be prevention, reuse and maximum recycling. There will, however, always be remaining ‘residual’ waste. Ensuring energy recovery from this residual waste, using highly engineered, controlled and regulated facilities, has a major role to play in a resource efficient society.
